Sam Xu - Comic Journalism

Serena Jiang- Fall Break Comic Journalism

During the fall break, I want to the Six Flags. The Hallowing is coming
so the decoration in the park is scared. The park open on twelve o'clock and
there are lots of people stay outside and wait for opening. This is my first
time went to a roller coaster theme park and I really enjoy this trip.

When we first came in the park, there are lots of  projects which are no
very scary. I love the Alice mad's cup. It reminds me of my first time went to
Disney with my parents. I used to go to amusement park with my parents but
after I grow up, I felt I have less chance to go with them. After this we played
almost every projects in this area. It's lots of fun and we laughed a lot.

We want to but these molecule ice cream once we went into the park, but
they closed and said open at two o'clock. It's wired that all the restaurants in
the park are all open after two o'clock. Eventually, we got these tidy and cute
ice cream. There are lots of favor and also have holiday special favor which
is Pumpkin and Chocolate chip. I want to get the rainbow but they sold out,
so I got the Birthday cake which is really delicious. I love these kind of ice
cream because they tasted cooler than eat other ice cream and they looks
lovely.

We played lots of roll coaster and I love the wooden one most because it
looks old and grans sight. Me and my friends are surprised about this one
and we don't know how they made this because it builded only by wood
and it's tall, and complex. The speed of this wooden roll coaster is not very
quickly so I relaxed and enjoy the wind a lot.

After six o'clock, we hear the news about the ghost will come out. I do
not like ghost and I felt sacred. We imagine a lot about how they looks like,
but when we saw them, they are all joker. We all don't like joker and felt
scared. There are lots of new recently about the joker scared people in
different states. We just want to leave the park quickly.

All the park are full off the smoke and made the environment more nervous.
Once we saw the clown we just run but the clown love to chase the people who
feel scared and run. So we were being chase for a long time and the clown even
touch us. Anyway, we run out the park and went back. This experiences is really
nice. I relax a lot and have a chance to play with my friends.

IVONNE MANON Fairytale-Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel are children whose father is a woodcutter. When a great famine settles over the land, the woodcutter's abusive second wife decides to take the children into the woods. Her plan was to abandon the kids in the woods so that she and her husband will not starve to death.
They discover a large cottage built of confectionery from which a hideous old hag emerges and lures them inside with the promise of soft beds and delicious food.

In this version poor families, unable to feed their children begin abandoning them in the depths of the forest. Desperate for food or shelter, naive children walk into the devils mouth. They encounter a sweet woman with a candy house, whose promise of food and shelter charms the children into feeding the system that maintains millions of children trapped in servitude, human trafficking and online sex tourism.
Poverty becomes the conveyor belt of child slavery, their dreams of a sweet life consumes them instead.

Sam Xu - Environmental Fairy Tale (Houyi and the Ten Suns)

The original Chinese tale of the ten suns tells of a deity, Di Jun, who had ten suns as children. The suns would take turns riding across the sky each day. One day, the suns grew tired of this and all ten of them rose to play in the sky together. Their combined heat made life on Earth unbearable, burning the land, drying crops, and killing people. Nine of the suns had to be shot down by the archer Houyi, and the remaining sun is the one we still see in the sky today. In my retelling, I'm focusing on the problem of drought that would be caused by this overheating of the planet. Crops are dead, and Houyi is forced to look for water along dry riverbeds, without strength to shoot down the suns.

Sarah Pilkinton - Goodman o' Wastness Environmental Fairy Tale

The Goodman o' Wastness

The Goodman o' Wastness is a version of an Orcadian selkie legend. Selkies are mythological creatures that are seals in the sea and humans upon land that are found in Irish and Scottish folklore. This particular version comes from Orkney, which is an archipelago off of the northeastern coast of Scotland.

Summary: The Goodman o' Wastness is an attractive, solitary man who is desired by many of the young women in his town. He ignores them and makes it clear that he does not desire to take a wife. Most of them become bitter towards him and leave him alone. One day, the Goodman is walking along the shore and he sees a group of selkies in human form lying upon the beach. He runs toward them. Most of them grab their seal-skins and escape back into the sea, except for one. He grabs her seal-skin and walks off with it. She follows him, begging him for her seal-skin back. When he gets to his house, he turns to her and finds that he loves her. Instead of giving her the seal-skin back, he hides it from her and forces her into marrying him. They are married for several years, have several children, and appear to be happy. However, every day she searches the entire house for her seal-skin. One day, when her husband is out and the selkie-wife is looking for her skin, her youngest daughter asks what she is doing. She tells her daughter that she is looking for a soft skin to wrap her feet in. The daughter says that she has seen such a thing on her father's shelf. The selkie-wife grabs the skin and runs off to the sea. She hurriedly puts it on, and meets her selkie-husband, who is waiting for her in the waves. However in this version, when the selkie-wife meets her husband, she is shocked by the amount of plastic pollution in the sea, and she sees that he has a plastic six-pack ring stuck around his neck.

Environmental Fairytale: The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid:
At the age of fifteen, as is customary in mermaid culture, the Little Mermaid swam to the surface to see the human world. She was amazed to see that the humans lived in a beautiful environment, with luscious plants, large homes, and breathable air. The underwater world in which she lived was nothing like that. Oil blackened much of the water and killed off so many sea creatures, mermaids included. Trash seemed to magically appear and pile up everywhere, so that it was becoming difficult to swim in the murky water without bumping into the ever growing towers of trash.
Being so young, however, the Little Mermaid didn’t know the ocean hadn’t always been this way, and so while the conditions were horrible, she just accepted them. But now that she saw that the human world was different, she knew she could never go back to living in her polluted underwater world. Little did she know who had actually caused her world to become polluted in the first place.
Knowing her father would never let her live in the human world, she went to the sea witch, who promised to turn her human in exchange for her voice. The Little Mermaid took the deal in a heartbeat, and, in the blink of an eye, she found herself washed ashore, lying on the sandy beaches she had only seen from afar. She was also aware that her tail had vanished, replaced by two legs.
As she attempted to figure out how to stand, the teenage prince of the nearby land came running down the beach. He saw her struggling, and also her beauty, and came to help her. He then realized she couldn’t speak and offered to take her back to the palace, where she could live for the time being.
On their way to the palace, the Little Mermaid noticed the Prince drop a bottle in the sand, only for it to be washed away by the tide. She then noticed other humans doing the same, leaving their trash to be taken by the tide. In the distance, she noticed huge factories with sludge-filled drains leading into the ocean.
The realization hit her: humans had polluted her world. Her friends and family were dying because of humanity.
She tried to yell at the Prince, to tell him that the humans had to stop polluting the ocean, but she had no voice. Unable to cope with this new realization and her inability to do anything about it, she broke away from the prince and ran down to the pier.
With one last look at the pristine world of humanity, she jumped into the sea, praying that she would turn back into a mermaid so all the other’s could know what humanity had done to their home, and letting herself be submerged in the oil-ridden water. It was then that she realized her legs had turned back into a tail.
It was too late, though. She sunk into the oil-water, ingesting it as she went, and was dead in a matter of minutes.

Eleanor Kim - Fairy Tales vs. Environment (Hansel and Gretel's Littering)

Full Story:
Once, they have found chests full of pearls and diamonds, Hansel and Gretel became very spoiled and wealthy children. Their father owns a lucrative toy and industrial factory. They live in a grand chateau with a crowd of maids and butlers to attend to all their needs. Never is there a lack of food – the family held feasts every night and Hansel and Gretel were great eaters.
As a change of routine, Hansel, Gretel, and their father went out in the neighboring woods for a picnic. Hansel and Gretel could not wait to eat - so they started taking food from the basket and ate while they walked, littering the path with plastics, wrappers, and trash. The animals complained about how they are ruining their home, which alerted the dead witch’s spirit of the woods.
The next day, Gretel remembered that she had brought her teddy bear on their last picnic outing, and she had lost it. Hansel and Gretel went out into the woods to search for it, but they got lost in the litter and forest. They came across a large landfill pile and heard a voice cry for help. They ran over and were startled to meet the dead witch’s spirit of the forest.
The witch ordered them to clean up the trash or else she will haunt them for the rest of their lives.
When all the trash was properly disposed of and recycled, the witch thanked them and happily drifted away. Gretel finally found her teddy bear, and the forest animals helped the two children back home.

Mica Linz- Fairy Tale vs. Environmental Final

Once upon a time there was a very poor peasant couple with lots of children. One night, the father heard tapping on the window and went outside to see what it was. It was a the polar bear king, who promised to make the family fabulously wealthy if the youngest daughter would marry him. She eventually agreed and went to live in his ice palace, where all their energy needs came from the sun and the wind. At night, when all the lights had been turned off, he turned into a man and lay down next to her. They lived happily together for a while, but eventually the girl grew unbearably curious about the polar bear king’s human form. The next night when he was asleep she lit an oil lamp and saw her husband’s true form, an amazingly handsome man. But he awoke and cried:
“I am under a curse, if you had been content with what you have and not used a harmful energy source to see me I would have been free. Now I must leave you and our palace shall melt away.”
The castle collapsed and a chunk of ice broke away with the polar bear king on it. It drifted away so fast there was no chance of him swimming back to shore.
