Migration Thumbnails and Sketches - Sam Xu

I chose the article "The Hidden Faces of Calais," which is about residents of the migrant camps in Calais, France. Many residents fear the media and camera attention out of concern for safety and their families they left behind. I wanted to focus on one child, Halul, who is terrified of cameras and mimics the actions and sounds of a gun being fired when he sees them. My final sketch is the colored one on the bottom right.

My chosen story is about how IOM help migrants beat Malaria in Thailand. It is said that mosquito is the carrier of the disease, so my idea is to express " beating the disease' in children's viewpoint or imagination and trying to make it fun and positive.

Migration Thumbnail sketches - Avani Dwivedi

"Peaks and valley: A story of Nepal" talks about how in Nepal people are being misuse because of the cheap labour they provide and these sketches are a rough improvement of my idea. These sketches tell how people without thinking of the consequences just leave there country without knowing much about where they are being send to.

Lee Bowen - Migration Sketches

My story focuses on a Lebanese family returning home from Syria with the help of the IOM, who loads a bus of refugees and escorts them home.

Option 1: Showing the family on the bus, traveling by destroyed neighborhoods.

Option 2: Showing the IOM loading the bus of refugees, giving them some supplies. The families carry all they own with them and say goodbye to friends they have sheltered with who cannot yet return home.

These are the process sketched of my Migration assignment. I wound up using alcohol based markers to get a sort of wash-like effect because I though it added a little to the atmosphere. I was focusing on how to make the project reflect the sad nature of the story without making it too upsetting for younger audiences or belittling the experiences of the people that were involved in it, I worked through it to create a sketch utilizing pretty general shapes and creating atmosphere while not portraying any specific person who was a part of the even.
